Angel City takes on San Diego Wave FC at 1 p.m. PST on Saturday, April 2 at Torero Stadium in San Diego, California. The match will be broadcast on CBS and stream live on Paramount+.
Midweek in Portland, ACFC lost 0–3 to the Thorns following goals by Sophia Smith, Yazmeen Ryan, and Morgan Weaver.Midfielder Savannah McCaskill – who scored ACFC’s first-ever goal in their opener against the Wave – was serving a one-game suspension during that match after being awarded a red card in last Saturday’s game, against OL Reign. ACFC heads into the weekend with a 0-1-2 record so far in the Challenge Cup.
In their first game against fellow expansion side San Diego, which was also their first official match as a club, Angel City was level with the visitors in shots with 17, putting six on frame, compared with the Wave’s five. Forward Christen Press had the lion’s share of Angel City’s shots, making seven attempts. For the Wave, the standout player was midfielder Taylor Kornieck, who led her team in both shots and chances created. She also had the second-most touches on the ball for San Diego, following defender Tegan McGrady.
Like Angel City, San Diego’s most recent result was also a loss to the Thorns; they fell 0–1 at home against Portland last weekend. That game saw the Wave out-possess and out-shoot the Thorns, but a fifth-minute goal by forward Smith made the difference. Forward Alex Morgan had the most chances for San Diego, taking four total shots, all on target. Kornieck and Jodie Taylor each made three attempts. The club is currently 0-1-1 in the Challenge Cup.
