Forward Alyssa Thompson signed with Angel City on January 11, 2023, after the club selected her with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NWSL draft. Thompson was the youngest player ever drafted into the league, and the first to be drafted straight out of high school.
Thompson joined ACFC from Total Futbol Academy, a boys’ club in MLS Next, Major League Soccer’s academy system. For two years, she played for her high school team, Harvard-Westlake, where she was named Gatorade National Player of the Year as a sophomore after recording 48 goals and 14 assists in 17 games. She had previously played with Real SoCal, as well as for the Santa Clarita Blue Heat—a semipro team largely consisting of college players—starting when she was just 13.
In 2022, Thompson earned her first call-up to the senior US Women's National Team, making her international debut against England in a sold-out match at Wembley. Also in 2022, along with her sister, Gisele, Thompson was the first high schooler to sign an NIL deal with Nike. Thompson is a third-generation Angeleno.
