For Angel City Creative Director Amedea Tassinari, the club’s 2024 jerseys are two contrasting sides of the same coin.
“There are two different energies, but these two different energies need each other,” says Tassinari. “There's no such thing as dark without light and no such thing as light without dark.”
That’s as true of the design itself—the black primary jersey, named Moonlight, and the pink secondary jersey, Sol—as of the story they tell.
“It’s about the grit and determination and resilience we bring to the game,” she explains, “but there's a joy at the core while we do it.”
That story has resonance in everything ACFC touches, from the players and coaches on the field to its supporters to its work in the community.
“Our team brings grit, determination, and resilience,” says Tassinari. “So do our fans. So do our efforts off the pitch and in the community. And the thing that makes that unique and special to Angel City is that we do so with joy at our core and a relentless optimism.”
For the team itself, grit was a major theme in 2023, as the club fought its way from near the bottom of the table into playoff position over the second half of the season. As forward Sydney Leroux said at the time, “It’s been a tough year for us so far, but we can show that we can get results. We can have grit, we can have heart. I think that’s the most important thing, to get out there and fight.”
At the same time, there’s an emphasis on not losing track of the reason everyone starts playing soccer.
“Becki [Tweed, ACFC head coach] talks a lot about playing with joy and happiness,” says defender Sarah Gorden. “Being around the team, there is this lightness and happiness, everyone being around each other and having fun and laughing. And I think that's rare in a professional environment. So those two things—playing with joy and playing with grit and passion—have come together and really been a big part of our culture.”
Design-wise, the jerseys draw on the club’s previous kits and on its established style guidelines to tell that story.
Continuing with the home color palette established with ACFC’s inaugural Dawn jersey, Moonlight places the wing from Angel City’s crest in a gritty asphalt-like texture over a black background, a reference to the determination and resolve needed to conquer the path ahead. The wings themselves recall the club’s motto, Volemos, and remind us to keep flying in our fight for equity.
The sunrise-toned gradient of the Sol jersey, meanwhile, sends the message that even after the darkest night, the sun will always rise another day.
A League-wide Refresh
With Nike recommitting to being the NWSL’s jersey partner, the sportswear giant is making a big statement of support of, and belief in, the league. For the first time, every club will offer bespoke jerseys, and all clubs’ jerseys will be available nationally. Alongside expanded field player jersey availability, goalkeeper jerseys will be available to buy later this spring, and the NWSL’s official match ball will go on sale at multiple retailers.
Each club’s primary jersey is a unique expression of that team’s identity, while the secondary jersey template being used leaguewide—a gradient pattern in each club’s colors—speaks to unity across the league.
The new model has allowed teams to collaborate in designing fashion-forward jerseys. Nike's reputation precedes it as a well-known brand, and by signing a long-term deal, they can help teams tap into the global market, especially in launching the league jersey campaign for all teams.
Launch Day
Angel City will be hosting a Sip, Shop, and Watch event at three locations across LA to celebrate the launch of the kits. Located at 33 Taps in Silver Lake, Culver City, and DTLA, the events are open to the public and will give fans the opportunity to see and shop the new kits in person, meet and get photos with players at each location, hang with fellow ACFC fans, and watch a Gold Cup match.
Angel City Season Ticket Members who attend will be entered to win a VIP raffle at each location and the first 50 members to arrive will receive a drink ticket at each location. See all the details here.
