Matchup

This is Angel City's second Challenge Cup game against San Diego for 2023, their fourth game against the Wave in all competitions, and their final group-stage game in the cup competition.

Angel City are in second place in the West division with two wins, two losses, and one draw. Their last game (both in the Challenge Cup and overall), against Portland, saw midfielder Savannah McCaskill score the opener in the ninth minute, followed by a late first-half goal by Thorns forward Morgan Weaver. McCaskill got the go-ahead goal in the 47th minute. Rookie goalkeeper Angelina Anderson stopped an 84th minute penalty kick in her professional debut to preserve ACFC's lead.

San Diego's last game was also a Challenge Cup matchup, which saw the team fall 0–1 to OL Reign following a goal by forward Bethany Balcer. The Wave are in fourth place in the West, having lost the last four after winning their first game in the competition.

The last time LA and San Diego played was at home on June 28 in another Challenge Cup game. Angel City won that match 2–1 on the strength of goals by midfielder Madison Hammond and forward Clarisse Le Bihan. Midfielder Danielle Colaprico scored for the Wave.
