Friday, June 20, at 5:00 p.m., Angel City Football Club is on the road against the top-ranked Kansas City Current. The game will stream live on Prime Video, with an English-language radio broadcast on iHeart. Angel City will host watch parties at Distrito Catorce in Boyle Heights and Hi Tops Lo Feliz.
Matchup
Angel City’s last game was a 1–2 loss at home to the North Carolina Courage. Forward Riley Tiernan scored for ACFC, with forward Cortnee Vine and midfielder Brianna Pinto securing the win for the visitors.
Kansas City beat Racing Louisville FC 4–2 at home last week on the strength of goals by Lauren Milliet, Michelle Cooper, Bia Zaneratto, and Temwa Chawinga.
ACFC last faced Kansas City on April 26, 2024, losing 1–3. They are 3–2–1 (W–L–D) all-time against the Current.
LA are currently in 10th place with a 4–5–2 record. Kansas City lead the league at 10–2–0.
Scouting Report
The 2024 Current had the best offense in the league by a comfortable margin, ending the season with 57 goals, a new league record, and 11 more than the eventual champions, Orlando. However, the team was hampered by a middling defense—they conceded 31 goals—and finished fourth in the regular season.
Almost halfway through the 2025 season, those defensive issues seem to have been resolved, as the Current have conceded just 10, the second best defensive record after Orlando.
The team’s high-flying offense has shown no signs of slowing down, either; they also lead the league in goals scored, with 28. Malawi international Temwa Chawinga, who scored 21 last year in her first season with the Current, again leads her team, with eight so far, alongside two assists.
Just below Chawinga with five goals is Debinha, an NWSL veteran who won two championships and three NWSL Shields with North Carolina before making the move to Kansas City in 2023. The Brazil international is the seventh-most prolific scorer in league history, with 52 career goals.
Squad Goals
Forward Riley Tiernan’s goal against the Courage was her seventh on the season, keeping her firmly in the Golden Boot race, with just three players ahead of her.
Saturday’s goal tied her for second place for most goals by a rookie; Ashley Hatch (2017) and Jazmine Reeves (2014) both scored seven in their rookie seasons—and Tiernan tied their records in week 12 of a 26-game season. Diana Ordóñez, who notched 11 with North Carolina in 2022, holds the record, and with 13 games to go, there’s plenty of time for Tiernan to try to reach or even pass that mark.
Tiernan’s goal wasn’t a solo effort. Not unlike Kennedy Fuller’s opener two weeks ago against Chicago, it was a team goal that saw four players—Alyssa Thompson, Alanna Kennedy, Gisele Thompson, and Julie Dufour—combine to unlock North Carolina’s defense and find Tiernan lurking at the six-yard line.
Dufour, who has started the last two games, also made key contributions on both goals: she had the second assist on Tiernan’s goal, and the week before, she served in the cross, initially blocked by a Chicago defender, that Fuller ended up sending into the back of the net.
