Matchup
Angel City’s last game was a 2–2 draw at home against Chicago. Midfielder Kennedy Fuller opened the scoring, with Chicago’s Nádia Gomes and Ally Schlegel scoring midway through the second half. Defender MA Vignola secured the draw in the 77th minute.
North Carolina Courage lost 3–1 on the road last week at Washington Spirit, with midfielder Manaka Matsukubo scoring the team’s lone goal.
ACFC last faced North Carolina on October 12, 2024, drawing 1–1. They are 3–1–2 (W–L–D) all-time against the Courage. Interestingly, though ACFC has earned various results against North Carolina on the road, all three home games against the team have been 2–1 wins—starting with Angel City’s first-ever regular-season game, on April 29, 2022.
LA are currently in ninth place with a 4–4–3 record. North Carolina are in 11th place at 3–5–3.
Scouting Report
North Carolina are currently in their lowest position in the standings after week 11 since 2022, the only year in the team’s history that it failed to qualify for the playoffs. However, they’ve also had some impressive results early in the season, including a 1–1 draw against second-place Orlando and a 3–2 win against first-place Kansas City.
The team’s biggest offseason acquisition was midfielder Jaedyn Shaw, who arrived via trade with San Diego Wave. The 20-year-old Shaw, one of the USWNT’s brightest young stars, joined the Wave mid-season in 2022. She scored six goals across all competitions in 2023—a league record for a teenage player—en route to the Wave winning the Shield.
Although Shaw has yet to appear on the score sheet for the Courage, she’s contributed across multiple other categories, creating 13 chances and taking 21 shots, putting her in the top 20 leaguewide for both statistics.
It’s another 20-year-old, Japanese international Manaka Matsukubo, who currently leads the club in scoring, contributing four goals, as well as two assists. Matsukubo has been with the Courage since 2023, but 2025 is looking to be a breakout year for the youngster, who only had three career NWSL goals before this season.
Scorer and Creator
Almost midway through the season, forward Alyssa Thompson is firmly in the Golden Boot race, with five goals—co-leaders Barbra Banda, Temwa Chawinga, and Esther González each have seven—and leads Angel City in all-time career goals, with 14 as of her May 25 goal against Louisville. She is also in the top 10 leaguewide for both shots (30) and shots on target (12).
In addition to scoring, though, the 20-year-old has also been a crucial contributor when it comes to creating goals. On top of two assists, the LA native leads the league in chances created, with an impressive 25, more than league veterans Marta and Debinha, who play for the current second- and first-place teams, respectively.
