Today, Angel City Football Club announced the signing of German goalkeeper Almuth Schult. With the German national team, Schult is an Olympic gold medalist (2016) and a European Championship winner (2013); she is a UEFA Champions League winner with VfL Wolfsburg (2014). She will join Angel City in July after the European Championship for the remainder of the 2022 season on a one-season contract with an option for an additional year. Schult, who has never played in the NWSL, will occupy an international roster spot.
'It has always been a dream of mine to play in the NWSL,” said Schult. “I have followed Angel City since the day the team was announced. It's so impressive and unique. Everything is not only about football, it's about impact and supporting women. I am proud to be joining the team and I look forward to the summer.”
Schult will finish her season with Wolfsburg, who are currently in the semi-finals of the Champions League, where she has played since 2013. Prior to joining Wolfsburg, she was with SC 07 Bad Neuenahr (2011–2013), Magdeburger FFC (2008–2011) and Hamburger SV (2007–2008). Her impressive accolades with Wolfsburg include five German championships, seven German cup wins, and a Champions League title win. She played her youth career at FC SG Gartow (1996–2007).
“We are delighted to sign Almuth Schult to Angel City FC. Almuth is one of the best goalkeepers in the world with a host of winning accolades at the highest level of the game that will bring winning experience and a winning mentality to our group,' said ACFC Sporting Director Eniola Aluko. “Almuth is in a very small category of players who have won league titles, Olympic Gold medals, European championships and the UEFA Champions League. It is a special addition to our goalkeeper group and defensive unit.”
“As an expansion team, being able to add a person and player of Almuth’s caliber will further sharpen our club’s competitive edge,” said ACFC Head of Goalkeeping Dan Ball. “Given the multitude of experiences she’s had and at the level she has consistently operated at throughout her career, Almuth will unequivocally make our group of goalkeepers better. We are excited to welcome her and her family to the west coast.”
Schult hails from a small town near Dannenberg, Germany with a population of approximately 120 people. She is a mother of twins, a boy and a girl.
