Today, Angel City Football Club (ACFC) confirmed the signing of US-born Jamaican National Team Captain Allyson Swaby. She will join ACFC following a successful tenure with AS Roma where the team won the highly-competitive Italian Coppa Italia competition in 2021. Swaby will play her final games for AS Roma in the Supercoppa competition in January 2022 before joining Angel City in preparation for the inaugural season. She is receiving a two-year contract with an option for the 2024 season.
“Allyson is a seasoned professional who I played against during my time at Juventus, Italy in 2018 and I have admired her rise as an international defender ever since,” said ACFC Sporting Director, Eni Aluko. “Allyson’s athleticism, versatility, and relentless desire to improve her game are qualities that set her apart. Her leadership experience with her native Jamaica will be a welcome asset to Angel City both on and off the field. We are also delighted to signal our international strategy with our first player representing the CONCACAF region where girls and women’s football is evolving.”
“I am incredibly proud to be a part of this club in its inaugural season,” said Swaby. “I’d like to thank everyone at Angel City for granting me this opportunity. The collective vision of the group lets me know that great things are coming our way. I cannot wait to get to Los Angeles, wear the kit for the first time, and meet our supporters. Let’s do this, LA!”
Swaby, a Connecticut native, began her collegiate career at Boston College, where she was named to the 2014 All-ACC Freshman Team. She graduated in 2017 after a successful tenure as team captain, starting in 20 matches and recording one assist.
After Boston College, Swaby moved abroad to join the Icelandic club Knattspyrnufélag Fjarðabyggðar. In late 2018, she moved to Serie A team AS Roma, where she appeared in 55 matches and in 2021 helped the team bring home their first major trophy at the Coppa Italia final. In 2018, she joined the Jamaican National Team. She made four appearances in the CONCACAF Women's Championship and at the 2019 World Cup in France for the first time in their history and was subsequently named captain.
Off the field, Swaby is an active member of Common Goal, a pledge-based organization that works to unite the global football community in tackling social challenges, and is committed to using her platform to promote equality through soccer.
Swaby will debut with the forthcoming Angel City roster under Head Coach Freya Coombe in Spring 2022 in Los Angeles at The Banc of California Stadium.
Today's news follows Angel City's roster-building milestones of the 2022 NWSL Expansion Draft on December 16 and the 2022 NWSL Draft on December 18.
