CARY, N.C. (August 26, 2026) - Angel City Football Club (ACFC) fell to the North Carolina Courage, 2-0, on Wednesday at First Horizon Stadium after forward Ashley Sanchez scored twice, including her record-breaking 15th goal of the season.
After an evenly played first half, Sanchez provided the difference with goals in the 41st and 78th minutes.
Both teams showed patience early, sharing possession throughout the opening stages of the match. Angel City’s backline was tested initially, but Sarah Gorden made a hustle play in the fourth minute, tracking back to disrupt a scoring opportunity from Sanchez.
North Carolina continued to apply pressure, with Ryan Williams forcing goalkeeper Angelina Anderson into a save in the 14th minute. Gorden made another defensive stop in the 28th minute, deflecting a left-footed attempt from Chioma Okafor. The ACFC captain remained a steady presence throughout the match, anchoring the defense as the team searched for answers in attack.
“Today it looked like we were a step behind, but I’m proud of my team because we left everything we had on the field,” Gorden said. “My teammates and I gave it everything we had tonight. We fell short, but we are more than ready to take the next few days to recover, review the film, and get ready for the next game. We’re gonna be ready for that.”
Angel City began finding opportunities as the first half progressed. Claire Emslie forced Courage goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan into a save in the 31st minute as ACFC applied a high press.
North Carolina broke through in the 41st minute. Sanchez finished a through ball from Evelyn Ijeh with a left-footed shot into the bottom-left corner, giving the Courage a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Sanchez’s 14th of the season, keeping her atop the NWSL Golden Boot race.
Angel City continued searching for an equalizer before the break, including an effort from Ally Sentnor that was saved by Sheridan.
Coming out of halftime, Angel City brought on forward Riley Tiernan and defender Savy King. King continued her return to the lineup, appearing in her third consecutive match after missing four months due to injury. The second half also saw the return of Sveindís Jónsdóttir, who entered in the 61st minute for her first appearance since Aug. 1 due to injury.
“[Jónsdóttir] is a very important player for us, so it's good to have her back,” Interim Head Coach Smerud said. “She's been out a few weeks, so she also needs a bit of time to get back into tempo. It was good that we could bring her on today, and she will be even more ready to play on Monday.”
In the 62nd minute, Jónsdóttir looked to make an immediate impact with a shot from outside the box, but her attempt was blocked.
Angel City continued pushing forward, with Jónsdóttir firing another attempt over the crossbar in the 73rd minute following a fast break created by Ary Borges.
Sanchez ultimately struck in the 78th minute, scoring her second goal of the night with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to extend North Carolina’s lead to 2-0. The goal marked her 15th of the season to break the Courage’s single-season scoring record.
Angel City made a final push as King had an effort blocked in the 81st minute and Sentnor won a free kick in the 89th minute, but Angel City was unable to break through late.
“Today we tried, but we lacked the final percentages to convert and to really get the performance and the result we want. North Carolina was one step ahead in a few key situations,” Smerud continued. “We played a top team in a really good performance that demanded a lot from us on Sunday, and now we played again today… it's natural that this is gonna cost some energy and we need to make sure we are recovered.”
Angel City travels to play Boston Legacy FC on Monday, Aug. 31, at 5 p.m. PT. The match will be televised on NWSL+ and CBSSN.
