Why does this heritage celebration start in the middle of a month? September 15th is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18. 
  • Read books by Latinx authors and learn more about the history of Latinx communities in Los Angeles. Here are couple great books to start with:
    • Boyle Heights, How a Los Angeles Neighborhood Became the Future of American Democracy, by George J. Sánchez
    • Latino Los Angeles: Transformations, Communities, and Activism, edited by Enrique C. Ochoa Gilda L. Ochoa
  • LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes - LA Plaza centers the Latino experience and provides a space to uplift, share, and preserve the stories of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Latinx people in Southern California.
  • The Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture - Visit this awesome art museum and academic center in Riverside. The center is focused on the presentation and study of Chicano art from across the United States.
  • Latino Public Broadcasting - Check out programming through Latino Public Broadcasting, the leader of the development, production, acquisition and distribution of non-commercial educational and cultural media that is representative of Latino people, or addresses issues of particular interest to Latino Americans.  
  • National Institute of the American Latino - The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino advances the representation, understanding and appreciation of Latino history and culture in the United States. The museum provides resources and collaborates with other museums to expand scholarly research, public programs, digital content, collections and more.
