Currently on loan to Olympique Lyonnais, defender Vanessa Gilles signed with Angel City FC (ACFC) on December 16, 2021. She previously played for the French Division 1 Féminine team Girondins de Bordeaux, who she signed with in July 2018. In early 2018, she signed with Apollon Ladies FC of the Cypriot First Division and scored ten goals in 14 games, leading the team to win the 2018 Cypriot Cup.

Gilles earned her first cap for Canada in 2019 in a friendly against Switzerland. She has 21 appearances with Canada, including in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she converted the team's final penalty kick in their semifinal match against the U.S., which set them up for a gold medal win against Sweden.

At the University of Cincinnati, Gilles was named to the 2014 AAC All-Rookie Team and earned the 2017 AAC Co-Defender of the Year award.
