Defender Merritt Mathias signed with Angel City on January 19, 2023, following a trade with the North Carolina Courage. The veteran defender spent five seasons in Cary, winning two NWSL Championships and two Supporters Shields with the club, both in 2018 and 2019. In 2018, she was a key part of the defense that conceded just 17 goals, a new league record, and was named to the NWSL Second XI. She recorded an assist in the 2018 Championship match.

Before North Carolina, Mathias spent time with the Seattle Reign (now known as OL Reign) and FC Kansas City. She played for the Reign during their 2015 Shield-winning season, after two successful years in Kansas City that saw the club win the NWSL Championship in 2014. Mathias is an NWSL original, joining FCKC in the 2013 NWSL Supplemental Draft. She played for the WPSL-Elite New York Fury in 2012.

Mathias played her college soccer at North Carolina and Texas A&M.
