From soft serve innovators to ice cream makers creating new, melt-in-your-mouth flavors, we have an abundance of options to satisfy our sweet cravings. In true Angel City fashion, we’ve rounded up five homegrown & women-owned ice cream shops that are a must in your summer plans. Check out what they’re servin’ up and scoopin’ up below!

Angel City’s Friday Five series is presented by DoorDash.

Carmela Ice Cream | Jessica Mortarotti

When Jessica Mortarotti dreamt up Carmela’s, artisan ice cream wasn’t very popular in the Los Angeles area. As she worked to develop her business, there was one thing she was certain of — she wanted to make handmade ice cream with seasonal & local farmers markets’ produce. Today, Carmela Ice Cream is unbeatable, bringing the community of Pasadena & farmers markets alike old-school ice cream with a new-school sensibility. Next time you visit, be sure to try some crowd favorite flavors like salted caramel, brown sugar vanilla bean, cardamom and lavender honey!

Magpies Softserve | Rose Schwartz

The inspiration behind Magpies Softserve came to Rose Schwartz when she was on a family vacation in Palm Desert. For nostalgia's sake, she stopped into Dairy Queen for ice cream and was immediately inspired. From day one, her goal was to expand the flavors of typical soft serve by creating flavors that would bring her back to her childhood. With locations in Highland Park, Silver Lake and Tarzana, you have to stop in to try their unique flavors like Corn Almond, Dulce de Leche, Honey Matcha and more!

Mother Moo Creamery | Karen Klemens

At this small Sierra Madre shop, locals stop in for root beer floats, milkshakes and ice cream that’s made in house daily. Owner Karen Klemens is known for making her small-batch, handcrafted recipes using only local, seasonal produce and Strauss organic milk. Lucky for us, one of the shop’s favorite (and most popular) flavors is back just in time for summer — Organic Strawberry made with Harry’s Berries Organic Strawberries. Now that the shop’s doors are open once again, you must try their Organic Strawberry, Salty Chocolate or Cornflakes flavors!

Sweet Rose Creamery | Shiho Yoshikawa

Sweet Rose Creamery was born out of partners’ Josh Loeb, Zoe Nathan, Colby Goff and Shiho Yoshikawa’s desire to create delicious ice cream in a nostalgic setting for friends and family to enjoy. Located only a few miles away from the famous Santa Monica Farmers Market, it’s no question that Chef Jen Bolbat is always inspired by what’s in season. Whenever you step into Sweet Rose Creamery, you’ll be sure to find some sweet creations that let those farmers market finds shine! Some of the shop’s current flavors include Old Fashioned Vanilla, Fresh Mint Chip, Salted Caramel and more.

Inspired by feelings of wanderlust, every flavor at Wanderlust Creamery is made from memories — the flavors that remind you of your childhood, the places you’ve been and the places you want to go. “This is my way of introducing exotic flavors to people,” says chef and co-founder Adrienne Borlongan. Like many of the shops on this list, the ice cream at Wanderlust Creamery is crafted in-house from scratch, sourcing some of the best ingredients from around the world. While part of the menu changes monthly to introduce new and unique flavors, you can always stop in for their signature flavors like Ube Malted Crunch, Sticky Rice + Mango, Abuelita Malted Crunch and more!
