Friday Five x DoorDash: Donut Shops

Friday Five x DoorDash: Donut Shops

The hole-ly grail for donuts, L.A. proudly holds the title of donut capital of the country. The popularity of the donut scene dates back to the 70’s, where a Cambodian immigrant, Ted Ngoy, opened up a sweet shop and helped other immigrants to launch their own. Ngoy’s original shop still has influence in the City of Angels today – not only did he start the sprinkle of donut culture throughout L.A., he was also the first to package his pastries in the iconic pink boxes now used in donut shops city-wide!

Whether you read that quick history lesson or simply glazed over it, go nuts for donuts and stop by these local shops for some sweet treats. And if you’re looking to send a loved one a donut delivery for the holidays, you can send a box from any of these shops using the "gift" feature on DoorDash.

Angel City’s Friday Five series is presented by DoorDash.

The Donut Man

The Donut Man is locally known and loved for its fresh fruit donuts, namely their fresh strawberry donut. Opened in 1972 under the original name of Foster’s Donuts, The Donut Man was a-dough-ably renamed as such because a little girl spotted the owner, Jim Nakano, and called out to him: “look, it’s the donut man!” The Donut Man held true to its roots and still looks much like it did back then, holding their same pride for cutting, shaping, frying, and frosting the donuts on-site, by hand, every single day.

Fonuts calls itself the “home of the enlightened donut.” With a donut that’s always baked, never fried, Fonuts was born when the owner, L.A. native Nancy Truman, craved something especially delicious and gentle on her gluten intolerance to pair with her morning coffee. From there, the “better-for-you” donut was created, backed by Fonut’s commitment to simple recipes with all-natural, gluten-free ingredients.
