Matchup

This is Angel City's first Challenge Cup game against San Diego for 2023, and their third game against the Wave in all competitions.

Angel City are in fourth place in the West division with one draw and two losses. Their last game, against Portland, saw them go down two goals by early in the second half, then battle back to tie the game up with goals by midfielder Clarisse Le Bihan and forward Claire Emslie, only to concede a third goal late in stoppage time. Angel City's last match overall was a 0–0 draw at home with Houston over the weekend.

San Diego are in third place in the West, with a win and a loss. Their last Challenge Cup game, which they lost 3–0, was against OL Reign. The Wave have just one goal to date in the cup competition, an own goal scored by Thorns defender Meaghan Nally in a 1–0 win against the Portland side. Their most recent game in any competition was also a loss to the Reign, this time by a score of 2–1, on Saturday.

The last time San Diego and LA faced off was on June 17, when ACFC beat their Southern California rivals 2–1 on the road in an NWSL game.
