Two Angel City defenders, Vanessa Gilles and Allyson Swaby—representing Canada and Jamaica, respectively—wrapped up their international commitments with the last day of the CONCACAF W Championship yesterday. Canada fell 0–1 to the USA to finish second in the tournament, while Jamaica beat Costa Rica 1–0 in the third-place match.
Swaby, who plays for Jamaica alongside her younger sister Chantelle, played every minute of the tournament and helped the Reggae Girlz record three shutouts, against Mexico, Haiti, and Costa Rica. Gilles, a gold-medal winner at last summer’s Tokyo Olympics, played 90 minutes in every match except Canada’s July 7 1–0 win against Panama, which she sat out. Canada conceded just one goal in their five games, against the United States in last night’s final.
Both Canada and Jamaica qualified for the 2023 World Cup through the tournament. In September 2023, they will compete against each other for a spot in the 2024 Olympics in a two-leg playoff.
Angel City’s next game is at home on July 30 at 7:30 p.m., against OL Reign.
