The results of the NWSL and NWSLPA Joint Investigation strengthen the case that change in our sport is gravely needed. We applaud the collaboration between the league and players’ union. Together, we believe we can set a new standard for safety, inclusivity, and professionalism across soccer and professional sports.
While it is critical that players have a prominent seat at the table, we know we cannot place all responsibility for change on their shoulders. In October of 2022, Angel City FC (ACFC) held two live community forums. Our staff and players answered questions from the public and shared their hopes for how we can collectively create the best environment possible for our players, staff, and fans. As a follow-up to those forums, here is an update on actions we have taken thus far and the initiatives planned for 2023.
Already In Place:
The hiring committee for key incoming soccer operations and coaching staff includes ACFC players
The Player Summit, set for the first two days of preseason, will include a detailed review of the following:
Code of Conduct
All reporting mechanisms
Support resources (i.e., human resources, team chaplain, clinical therapists, outside counsel)
An anonymous reporting structure that allows players and staff to reach out directly to HR, bypassing supervisors
ACFC staff and player Code of Conduct, created in collaboration with players
Supporter Code of Conduct posted on ACFC website and in-venue on match days
Initiatives in Progress:
Stadium policies reflecting limitations for anyone under investigation for misconduct
Ongoing DEI training for players, staff, and supporters
Bystander training for players, staff, and supporters
Third-party background checks on all front office hires and third-party reference checks for certain front office hires
ACFC is committed to working every day alongside our community to make our club, our league, and our sport the very best.
