LOUISVILLE, KY (September 5, 2026) - Angel City Football Club (ACFC) closed out its three-game, 13-day road stretch with a 2-0 victory over Racing Louisville FC on Saturday at Lynn Family Stadium, earning three points and moving into eighth place in the NWSL standings.
Angel City entered the match looking to be aggressive while limiting Louisville's transition opportunities. Despite the heat in Louisville, with temperatures reaching 94 degrees at kickoff, ACFC managed the conditions.
“Today was a grind, and to win a game like this in the way we did, tells the players that this is what it takes,” Interim Head Coach Leif Smerud said. “I praised the group before the game today, because I think the atmosphere, the togetherness, is really good. They give all of themselves. They are really one unit, and when you have that group mentality going, I think that's the foundation to become a really good team.”
Louisville created the first opportunity in the seventh minute when defender Ellie Jean headed an attempt off the crossbar. Angel City responded with several chances of its own, including blocked attempts from Sveindís Jónsdóttir and Gisele Thompson.
In the 19th minute, Prisca Chilufya forced a save from Louisville goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer, while Savy King made a vital defensive play one minute later, stepping in with a tackle inside the box to deny a Louisville opportunity.
Angel City continued to patiently work through possession, as Ally Sentnor narrowly missed an opportunity in the 24th minute.
The second half continued with chances at both ends. Shores forced a save from Bloomer in the 55th minute with a header from the center of the box, while Angelina Anderson made a key save one minute later to keep the match scoreless.
Angel City eventually found the breakthrough in the 69th minute. Shores received the ball from outside the box and fired a left-footed strike past Bloomer to break the scoreless second half. Sarah Gorden provided the assist, her second of the season, as Angel City took a 1-0 lead.
“We came in at halftime, and we knew that we needed to push, and we had more to give,” Shores said. “We came out in the second half, just pushing harder, and it ended up working out for us.”
Louisville looked for an equalizer, but Angel City’s defense continued to hold firm. Anderson made a save on Kayla Fischer’s attempt in the 71st minute and denied Maja Lardner in the 77th minute. Larder came closest to leveling the match in the 85th minute when her right-footed attempt from the center of the box struck the woodwork.
With an assist from Ally Sentnor, Shores found the back of the net from the center of the box in the first minute of stoppage time, sealing Angel City’s 2–0 victory. The goal completed Shores’ first career brace and third goal of the season.
“The quality of Evelyn is very good. She can play both ways,” Smerud said. “She can hit crosses, head shots, and she can join in without the ball. Her performance today was top, and made a big difference. She's a very promising player who already plays at a high level.”
The performance also reflected the defensive strength of Angel City as Angelina Anderson recorded her seventh shutout of the season. King, Gorden, Shores, and Emily Sams also played a role in limiting Louisville's attacking opportunities.
“I can't say enough about our defensive unit. It's such an awesome thing to be able to play with Sarah, Savy and Angelina — everyone back there. Even people coming in off the bench, just giving us the boost defensively,” said Shores. “Being able to come out with a clean sheet also says a lot about our team, making a push for the playoffs, and I'm just looking forward to what's coming this season.”
The victory gave Angel City six total points on the road, moving the club into eighth place as they aim for their first postseason appearance since 2023.
Angel City returns home to host Denver Summit FC on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7:00 p.m. PT at BMO Stadium. The club will celebrate Black Excellence theme night and the match will be televised on ION and NWSL+ (locally).
